|Greetings from the Akili Dada Team! We are an international non-profit organization empowering and nurturing the next generation of Africa’s women leaders by offering scholarships, mentoring, and leadership training to brilliant young women from underprivileged backgrounds.
Meet Akili Dada’s 2012 Fellows
“Throughout my journey with Akili Dada, I get confirmation and assurance that amidst the past and present occurrences in life I can build my future to become better than yesterday.” - Asia, Akili Dada Fellow
To end a week of celebrating women in honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th, we are proud to introduce our 4 current Akili Dada Fellows – Martha, Asia, Faith, and Mercy. These amazing young women completed high school in December and are serving as interns in our Nairobi office while undertaking the extensive process of applying to university. All four scored exceptionally well on their national K.C.S.E exams, qualifying them for full scholarships to public university in Kenya.
Piloted in 2011 and open to all alumnae who have completed secondary school, Akili Dada’s Fellowship program provides modest stipends for internships which enable them to gain valuable professional experience while contributing to the growing Akili Dada sisterhood. Last year, a total of 5 alumnae served as Fellows, including Gloria, whose story we featured previously.
This team of young women provides crucial support to our Program Coordinator and helps keep the wheels of Akili Dada running smoothly. Their responsibilities range from administrative tasks to mentoring current scholars to planning Akili Dada events, while also developing and managing their own independent community service projects. We are inspired by their energy and creativity and grateful for their contributions, and we look forward to welcoming additional alumnae to the program by year-end.
“It is a jungle out there as every human being struggles to get to the top. More often than not they have to step on others to get there. How rare it is to find someone willing to lift you up there. Akili Dada is that someone for me.” - Martha, Akili Dada Fellow
White House Honors Akili Dada’s Founder
Akili Dada’s founder and Executive Director, Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg, was honored asa “Champion of Change” at the White House on January 30, 2012. As part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative, the Champions of Change program celebrates leaders who are helping build stronger communities across the country and working to mobilize networks across borders to address global challenges. Wanjiru was one of 14 leaders in American Diaspora communities with roots in the Horn of Africa who were celebrated at the January 30th White House ceremony.
