In 2014, Akili Dada was honored to bring our youngest ever fundraiser into the folds of the sisterhood.  Then only 15 years old, Miel found that she deeply connected with the mission and vision of Akili Dada, more specifically girls’ education and leadership development. While living in Nairobi, Miel served as an intern at Akili Dada to contribute in multiple ways and learn more about the organization.  Inspired, Miel was moved to share more about Akili Dada with her parents and networks in Kenya and Singapore.  Miel committed to raise $10,000 over the course of the year to support our work specifically under the Young Changemakers Program, which creates opportunities for girls between the age 13-19 to develop as leaders in their schools and communities.

“A move to Kenya made me aware that not all children have the opportunity to go school. I think that education should be a right, not a privilege.”  - Miel

One year later, Miel launched a campaign to mobilize friends, family and larger community to contribute to the fundraising campaign she initiated.

In Miel’s Words:

“Supporting education and leadership development in Kenya is something that is near and dear to my heart. And my journey with Akili Dada is what drives me towards this end; educating girls.”
