The 2016 Gap-Year interns class have graduated in a colourful event at the Akili Dada offices. The girls reflected on their experiences and key learnings from the program. It has been a busy year for the girls with various activities filling their time. They have undergone skills-based trainings, mentorship, internships, and have also taught in under resourced schools as well as initiated community service projects.

The interns and former alumnae proceed to university after gaining admissions to universities abroad and locally. They will be joining Ashesi University in Ghana and the KIIT University in India as well as local universities in Kenya.

The girls interned at the Akili Dada office and assisted with various office duties. Some worked for Premier Training Services, while others worked as volunteer teachers at Kawangware Primary School and Dagoretti Approved School while 1 girl and an alumna got the opportunity to work for Areev and Happy Creative companies in India.

In their exit presentations, the girls reminisced on their memorable experiences being the Outdoor Leadership Academy where they hiked and camped in the Loita Hills for a week. Lorna noted that the grueling walk in the world taught her to never lose hope and to keep going on even when faced with difficult situations, keeping her eyes on the goal.

Another experience that stood out for them was when they met Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafsazai and her father as well as meeting Bob Collymore, the CEO of Safaricom in the same event.

They also got mentorship and talks with key influential women like Elizabeth Marami, Kenya’s first marine pilot, Prof. Cassandra Veney of USIU as well as Linda Ogeda, co-founder of Lightbox Productions.

Skills that they were imparted with are work preparation, emotional intelligence, communication & negotiation skills, Google Apps, Design Thinking and philosophy.

In her speech, Donna echoed the words of the other girls, “I wouldn’t have done it any other way.”

We wish the girls all the best as they transist to the next phase of life.
