Akili Dada Gap Year Interns lending their faces to the #MaktabaAgenda book drive.
Reading is an essential skill for young and old people alike, fostering a reading culture builds the enthusiasm and skills for lifelong learning. The reality however, is that in Kenya today reading does not come easily to many students as many of them especially those from underprivileged backgrounds do not have access to books let alone libraries. It was with this in mind, that Akili Dada’s Gap Year Interns 2015, decided to intervene and establish a library at the Kawangware Primary School.

After serving as volunteer teachers at the under-resourced public school, our Dadas identified that the school was in need of a library to serve their students. Hence the library project was born. As their way of giving back to the community, our alumnae’s vision was to rehabilitate an old classroom that the school designated for the project, creating a space for exploration, learning and creativity.
Naming the project ‘Akilitransformers’, which is a play on Swahili and English words to mean ‘transformation of the mind’ our Dadas began mobilizing for resources from within the Akili Dada community and without. As a result the project resulted in partnership with, Vitabu Vyetu an initiative of Akili Dada Mentor Wanja, and launched the #MaktabaAgenda campaign. The campaign not only raised awareness of the library project but allowed for members of the public to come in and join the initiative.

The 2 month social media campaign also saw the project receiving support from all parts of Kenya roping in additional support from 1000Rides Kenya who helped fundraise for the book drive and Colour My world Kenya who came in for the painting day.
We would like to say thank you to everyone who gave of their time, resources and efforts to bring the #MaktabaAgenda to life. We still need your help, #AdoptAShelf will be running in the coming months to ensure that the library is fully stocked.
