“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” – Confucius

The tiny detail that Confucius failed to share with us is how to find that thing you love and make a career out of it.

I embarked on this journey with little direction and guidance. I found myself at the university studying a course that the job market was consuming on the one hand, and that was ‘female friendly’ on the other.  Both were key elements in my journey to communications however these  were only pieces of a puzzle that happened to fall into place, working to my advantage. After joining the job market, I began to examine other factors and fundamentally question my choice in career. I went back to the basics. I looked at – what was it that came naturally to me i.e. my gift? It was clear that I was in my element when storytelling. I also asked the fundamental question that is – what drives me?  The answer was simple – being part of a movement of change and empowerment for young African women through mentorship.

This is precisely what drew me to the Communications and Impact Manager role at Akili Dada. I am thrilled to be part of this organisation that is creating the space for emerging young women leaders to grow; and better still that I have the opportunity to share their stories with the world. I look forward to illuminating the stories of innovative social change projects led by our fellows who are creating a positive shift in their communities; stories of the transformative journeys of our scholars as they begin to better understand leadership and apply it in their day-to-day lives; stories of our mentors and how the intergenerational relationships they build grow a sisterhood of leaders who are dedicated to developing our communities from the inside out.   I look forward to sharing the story of Akili Dada – an organisation that started with one woman’s dream, but now blows the wind of change in women’s leadership in the African continent and beyond.
