Akili Dada’s Contribution to #Beijing20 and #TheAfricaWeWant

Akili Dada participated in the Regional Beijing+20 Civil Society Organizations Consultation Meeting that took place on the 21st – 22nd October. Represented by our Director of Young Changemakers Program,Veronica Thamaini, we are excited to be part of the 20 year review of the Beijing Platform for Action, a landmark moment and declaration for the rights of women and girls.

This review process is critical for the purposes of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) of 2015, which will discuss and adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and will guide the post 2015 development agenda. Akili Dada is lending its voice by sharing our experiences, and expertise with a focus the Girl Child and Young Women.  This is giving us the opportunity to be part of the conversation as Africa decides what the critical issues affect girls and women.

Veronica moderated the plenary session “Looking at Girls and Young Women”, a subject close to Akili Dada’s heart and the core of our work. The session articulated two key outcomes that we want to see in Africa:

1.  A society free of violence against women and girls

2. A society that embraces gender equality in all spheres of life and recognizes the value of young women and girls.

The second outcome speaks directly to Akili Dada’s vision of ’a world where empowered African women from diverse economic backgrounds are equally represented in leadership roles and decision-making processes in Kenya and across the continent.’

We are also participating in the Ninth Regional Conference on Women (Beijing+20) currently taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Be part of the conversation; engage with us online (@akilidada, #Beijing20, #theafricawewant).
