“I believe in a diverse thriving tech community that offers equal opportunity to women. That’s my motivation for everything I am doing.”
Last year, Akili Dada Alumna, Njeri Chelimo was accepted into the summer intake of Hacker School, a U.S.-based “retreat for hackers,” where budding programmers gather for three months to write code, learn new languages and share industry insights. The programmer boot camp was free to attend, but she still needed to cover trip fees and buy a laptop. Njeri ran an online crowdfunding campaign Indiegogo raised nearly $5,800 to fund her trip. After all her efforts and the investment of the community, she didn’t qualify for a tourist visa. Rather than dropping her dream, she turned around, took a look at her own community and decided to build a local solution and start a school for developers in Nairobi.
Njeri’s Nairobi Dev School and has been nominated for the Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition.
