Akili Dada partnered with Oracle in October for the Oracle volunteer day. As a practice, Oracle has on its calendar a day set out for its employees to perform acts of service in the communities they live in.
Oracle was extremely impressed with Akili Dada’s work and was eager to partner with us. They were particularly interested in 2013 Fellow, Ann Nyambura’s project in Mathare Mathare (an informal settlement-slum in Nairobi). Ann’s social change project brings young women together creating alternative fuels for household use. The briquette-making livelihood project in Mathare slum uses the enterprise as a platform to address the deeper social obstacles the young women face in their everyday lives. On October 5th, Oracle global volunteer day, a group of Oracle employees gathered in Mathare for a clean-up activity. The Oracle staff decided that for their volunteer day, they would team up with Ann and her group of young ladies to clean up the area around the center where the briquette are made by the young women. The Oracle staff and young women met early in the morning to clean the streets and drains around the girls’ center. The Oracle staff provided brooms, shovels, masks for the clean-up exercise. After 3 hours of hard work, the girl’s center was looking fantastic. It was a day well spent. The highlight of the day for everyone the way other community members (including the children) from the area joined in the clean-up exercise. Thanks to Oracle and Ann for the fantastic work!
