I get to work closely with the cameraman, and I love watching what he’s doing and asking questions. In future I want to do journalism, so this internship gives me a good idea of what to expect when I go into that career.” – Winnie, alumna of Akili Dada’s high school program, on her internship with The XYZ Show.
After a chance meeting with the famous political cartoonist Gado during the Ford Foundation Champion of Democracy event late last year, we’re so excited to see that a fruitful collaboration has emerged! Two alumnae of Akili Dada’s high school program, Winnie and Judith, are currently engaged in a short-term internship working with Gado’s production company, Buni Media, which also produces the hilarious, pointed satirical XYZ Show. Winnie and Judith, both of whom are interested in various aspects of the arts, journalism, and fashion, are assisting on the production set for a pilot children’s show.
I’m helping in the wardrobe department, preparing the puppets each morning and changing the sets. I also help in the art room. This internship has made me more interested in art and especially puppetry and I would like to do something with both of those in future.” – Judith, alumna of Akili Dada’s high school program.
At Akili Dada we believe that young women should have access to diverse opportunities that expose them to a wide range of creative and professional pursuits as they explore their own potential career trajectories. We also believe that the arts and creativity are key components of driving social change in Kenya, so we are thrilled by the recent partnerships with Buni Media. We’re glad to be able to partner with innovative and creative thinkers and doers who will nurture, mentor, and train the driven young women of Akili Dada even while they carry out their own critical social change work in Kenya, so thank you to Gado and the Buni Media team!
